Boring, Wordy, Repetitive

I'm not a thriller fan and don't think I've ever watched the dracula movie all the way through so it's not surprising that I don't like this book. I'm just 80% through with this book and every page is an effort. I try to read one chapter every day (about 10 pages), but it's very easy to put down before I get to the end of the chapter. It is wordy, repetitive, boring. I hate the half-page sentences and page-long paragraphs. On the plus side, it does have a story that follows logically and doesn't have daisies blooming in January. My perception is that the theme is good vs. evil although I'm aware that there are other views. The book is sprinkled liberally throughout with bits of wisdom, and it contains numerous Biblical references. The good guys are bound by a sense of duty. Count Dracula is evil personified. I think editing it and cutting half of it out would improve it a great deal. However, it is a classic and has lasted more than a century so who am I to judge.

All the cleverness used up in Soul Identity--this one doesn't add much

I recommend the original effort Soul Identity. The key to that plot is clever, original and the author fleshes out some nice characters. This book, Soul Intent, attempts to keep the ride going, further leveraging that plot and those characters without adding anything particularly clever--it's all just a little too convenient and the way the book presents history and then has a current character retell the story often feels a bit slow and awkward.

Enjoyed the trilogy

I really enjoyed all three books in the trilogy. The author has a good writing style: easy to read, good characters, and makes you want to keep reading. Highly recommend this book for anyone interested in the zombie genre.

Incredible and well told

"Incidents in the life of a Slave Girl" is the incredible life journey of Harriet Jacobs (a.k.a., Linda Brent) from oppression to freedom. One could scarcely believe the lengths a human soul would suffer to attain it.

I was engulfed in Harriet's story. There were things I never put much thought to, like the lives of the slaves of kind masters were held so delicately in balance, for when they die, life can change so quickly; and even the granting of freedom upon death can be no guarantee of freedom. Harriet makes a passionate argument for why slaves, even under kind masters, should be set free.

Harriet describes things so hard to believe, I did find myself doubting, like hiding in quarters so cramped, she could not stand up . . . for seven years. It's not that a person wouldn't want to do that given the alternative of slavery and she didn't know initially how long she would be there. It's implausible because this storage shed was on her grandmother's property and that property was under suspicion so that it was searched inside and out and no one thought to search the shed just because no one ever went in there? The attic of that shed would have been the first place I'd have looked, even if it didn't look like it had a door. Her children weren't supposed to know she was there but her son figured it out, because he heard her cough. Well, he was just a little boy and he figured it out. Surely, others heard noises, as well.

Secondly, her master sought her as he would try to woo a girlfriend. When she ran away, he searched for her and offered rewards, as would be expected of slave owners. However, after seven years, neigh even more, he continued to travel north in search of her. Even if he were smitten with her, I wouldn't have expected it to last that long. Considering she was his slave, I would think he would have thought her forever lost property; and she'd been replaced, except for maybe outstanding reward money. Harriet said slaves were treated like dogs, and people don't usually travel the states for seven years looking for lost dogs.

Overlooking those details, I was able to enjoy the book. Harriet Jacobs was a talented writer. I lived her life through her words. Though it sometimes read like fiction, it could not have been better told.

Dreamlike

Even according to my usually odd tastes, Lilith is a strange read, certainly stranger and more surreal than the works of C.S. Lewis, who was greatly inspired by MacDonald. The beginning has a standard fantasy feel. The hero, Mr. Vane, is seeing to his estate. One day in the library he sees a strange apparition. Curious, he follows the spirit of the enigmatic Mr. Raven and finds himself led into a fantastical otherworld. From there the narrative becomes decidedly bizarre. Reading Lilith is like peering into a dream as Vane encounters a steady procession of inexplicable situations and grotesque images. In fact, MacDonald packs the book with so many symbols and lessons that the narrative structure tends to break down a little, and I found the story dragged quite a bit in the middle. This and MacDonald's sometimes awkward attempts at exposition made finishing the book questionable for me for a large portion of the story.

Yet I persisted... and I'm glad I did! I find it a little difficult to say why I liked Lilith. MacDonald was writing for Christian readers, and I am not one of them. I wanted to read it because of my general interest in religious imagery in fantasy and a more specific interest in the odd ways that particular mythological character has been reinvented and reinterpreted by different people. I certainly do not embrace all of MacDonald's moral ideologies fully, and some I find vaguely distasteful. Even so, I was enthralled with the images MacDonald chose to describe Vane's spiritual journey. I was intrigued when Mr. Raven subjects Vane to a Zen-like line of questioning at the beginning of the novel. I found the description of Vane's redemption and rebirth deeply moving and beautiful. Perhaps this is just my Christian upbringing showing through, but I like to think it also speaks to the relatedness of all spiritual seeking, and to the deeps well of myth and imagination from which MacDonald drew.

Important new book

Dr. Laurie Mischley's new book, Natural Therapies for Parkinson's Disease, will provide both information and solace for those with Parkinson's Disease and their families. It's a book for anyone who is not content to treat Parkinson's passively with drugs but who wants a diet and a nutritional regimen that will help slow or even reverse the progression of the disease. It's also an important read if you have someone with Parkinson's in your family, as Mischley's book is as much about prevention as about treatment.

Natural Therapies for Parkinson's Disease is research- and science-based. It contains a long list of references to medical studies that support its claims. Perhaps most important, Dr. Mischley's book is a book to take to your doctor. It's written as a bridge between the medical and naturopathic worlds--to educate both patients and neurologists about a holistic, science-based alternative to purly symptomatic treatment.
