Freakin awesome 50mmSo when I got my XS I read that I should skip the kit lens and just get a cheap body and this 50mm. This lens did not disappoint. At first I thought it sucked because I didn't know how to use it and was using autofocus, for really good stills use that digital zoom button to get stuff far away in clear focus, its surprising how much detail you can get in your pictures. Sucks that I can't zoom in or out but I would rather have clear pictures and run around all the time than be frustrated trying to get a good quality picture with a zoom lens. Lots of people say the construction for this sucks, but what the heck do they expect from a plastic lens? its obviously built to be lighter and not weigh down your camera, besides if you drop your camera you're and idiot, thats why these things have neck straps, but i could see how a kid could grab a hold of it and slam it on the ground (this wold probably not survive) regardless its a great deal for 100 bucks, its inexpensive because its plastic, manual focus seems loose, autofocus is snappy and makes a really cool mechanical sound, 1.8 aperture at this price is an insane deal and i really don't care with any of the little faults on this lens, it takes great pictures and motivates me to move around and find more dynamic angles for taking pictures by forcing me to move around to get closer/further from subjects

Must Buy....bought this Lens for my Nikon D5000, I was afraid that it might not behave in accordance to the caliber of the D5000 body, but I was amazed to see the results. This is a nikkor lens manufactured especially for Nikon DSLR's, I own a 70-300 telephoto, 18-55 standard nikon lens and a fish eye and now this 50mm portrait lens, which completes the package. The lens does not comes with a motorized automatic focus and so is sensitive enough to through the picture of focus so mind that you ensure the frame is in focus. I would recommend using eye-piece over live view feature, it helps ensuring crisp picture...... long story short.... must buy lens, awesome for portrait photography. The depth of field could be controlled by setting the aperture, you will be amazed to see that the DoF changes dramatically just by setting aperture, so get the lens and start shooting, I have posted few customer provided images, so please chck them to see the fantabulous results...... enjoy clicking

Just another positive reviewWhen coupled with a VR equiped Nikon, you will be amazed at the quality of the handheld, low light shots. Pictures that would normally require a tripod, are now possible with a point and shoot. I've gotten clear shots (non-telephoto) at a 15th of a second, and telephoto at a 30th! Don't by the kit lens that they want to force on you with the camera purchase. Buy the camera bare, and get this all-around "picture perfect" lens. You won't be dissappointed. There is a reason why this lens has so many great reviews.
