| Good vocals, so-so songsI gave this cd a try based on the reviews, and the fact that it was recommended for me based on my purchase of the new Taylor Swift cd. I have an earlier Sugarland cd, so I figured this one couldn't be that bad. The vocals on his ablum are great, but most of the songs are are pretty generic mid-tempo country-pop songs - nothing spectacular. In fact, this whole piece reminded me of something a recent American Idol alum would throw together and put out quickly just to get something out there while their name was still fresh in people's minds. In fact, the best track on the whole album is one written by another artist - Matt Nathanson's "Come On Get Higher" - which is one of the bonus tracks.
Do yourself a favor and skip this one. Taylor Swift's "Fearless" is a much better pick. Read more...

| Another winning set from country music's Mr. Consistency"Consistent" would be an insult to an artist of Strait's caliber if it were used euphemistically to mean "mediocre," but in Strait's case, it means consistently good. Very good. Few have waxed as listenable an album catalog as Strait, filled out with hit singles and deep album tracks, and punctuated by exceptional entries like 1989's Beyond the Blue Neon and 2003's Honkytonkville. His unerring ear for material and the enthusiasm he's brought to recording on a nearly annual basis since 1981 (this is his twenty-eighth album in twenty-eight years!) is simply breathtaking. Even more impressive is that Strait's kept true to his own artistic vision as trends came and went, yet his work has never become repetitious or perfunctory. His latest album extends the streak with a thoughtful collection of new songs whose introspective themes play well to Strait's growing stature as an elder statesman, and whose light productions closely fit his easy musical style.
Strait's comfort in his own skin is both inspirational and infectious. The album's title track finds the singer laboring against the changes of middle-age, but realizing the fires that fueled his youth still burn within him today. A singer of lesser talent or personal experience couldn't hope to convey the nostalgia, melancholy, grit, resignation and pride woven together in the lyric. At the same time, Strait can distill simple moments of discovery, such as found in "I Saw God Today," into deep faith, and he finds meaningful discovery from a theme that could have been nothing more than treacle. Strait knows his way around pain, too, sad and broken for "If Heartaches Were Horses" and solemn for the three desperate scenes of "Give Me More Time."
Even the album's most straight-forward songs, like the waltzing love song "It Was Me," the two-stepping "Brothers of the Highway," and the breezy "River of Love" draw you in with warmth and joyousness. Producer Tony Brown shows just how effective Nashville A-list players can be, weaving their expert playing into organic arrangements that avoid the modern clichés demanded by commercial radio. The results sound like Nashville without sounding like Nashville-begging-for-airplay - just check out quality of the guitar, steel and piano on the honky-tonk "Make Her Fall in Love With Me Song" or the fiddle and Western Swing of "West Texas Town." There's a subtle evolution heard throughout this album as George Strait takes stock, and it gives an encouraging sense of just how gracefully he'll age as an artist. | Folk Rock At Its Core, But Also Much MoreMost people have heard the two major hits from Eye To The Telescope - "Black Horse And Cherry Tree" and "Suddenly I See". However, if that is the full extent of your experience with KT Tunstall's debut CD, then you have really missed out. Eye To The Telescope is full of great songs that cover a broader spectrum.
Vocally, there is a lot to like here. Tunstall shows an ability to succeed at a variety of different styles. She is sweet (without being sappy) on the opener "Other Side Of The World" as she gracefully hits falsetto notes on the chorus. Many of the songs - including "Under The Weather" and "Heal Over" - boast rich vocal harmonies. On hit "Black Horse And The Cherry Tree" Tunstall evokes Joan Jett with her growls on the chorus. Typically when an artist tries for this much breadth in style something comes up short; however, this is not the case on Eye To The Telescope.
Lyrically, Tunstall doesn't break a lot of new ground, but her songs manage not to come across as trite. "Another Place To Fall" deals with the after effects of bad relationships. The lyrics are often metaphorical as the line "But now you have got indigestion/The answer comes in the form of a question" from "Another Place To Fall shows. "Black Horse And The Cherry Tree" is probably the least straightforward song as Tunstall laments having sent her heart away only to find that it won't come back. Suffice it to say that you will listen to these songs time and again, and still you won't be quite certain the specific or exact meaning. As a final note, I found it a minor annoyance that the liner notes obscure the lyrics on the first four songs with black text and an almost black background in places.
Instrumentally, Eye To The Telescope is heavily influenced by folk. With songs that like "Black Horse And Cherry Tree", "Miniature Disaster", "Silent Sea", and "False Alarm" that feature acoustic guitars as well as "Miniature Disaster" and "Stoppin' The Love" that have clapping supporting the rhythm, you have classic folk ingredients. At the same time the songs are not so simplistic. "Stoppin' The Love" has a mellow, reggae influenced guitar line as well as mixing in some violin. The long song that features more of an electronic sound is "Universe & U", yet it does not stick out. Finally, the closing number, "Through The Dark" is a slower song supported mostly by jazz tinged piano and drums.
Overall, Eye To The Telescope is an impressive CD from KT Tunstall - especially when you consider that it is her first. It is that rare treat that is musically diverse yet has the continuity to keep it from seeming like a collection of random, disconnected songs. If you like music that is folk at its core yet layers in other styles for extra depth; you should give this a spin. Read more...

| I'm A Believer!T.I. has really stepped his rap game up. Massively. I say this with good reason, because I am not a big T.I. fan. Ever since I heard Rubber Band Man" way back when, I've been turned off the guy's music. I even had some hopes for King, but I was annoyed when listening to it. This is the first time that I've liked ANY of his singles, much less liked an album of his, let alone loved it.
This album has truly brought out a more mature version of T.I. that has been long overdue in his life, and especially his music. Almost every track on here is a testament to this man's growth, save for maybe 4 or 5 which are good for what they are: fun songs to bump in the car. One of his two singles "Live Your Life" is one of the strongest tracks period, especially due to the very positive and uplifting message that is uncommon in much of T.I.'s previous work. I like this album because the overall tone is basically the same is "Live Your Life".
Paper Trail is a milestone in T.I.'s career. He puts out a quality product, with production, content, and lyrics are at a personal best. If he has the ability to make a avid T.I. hater like me give him my time and money, then this CD is worth checkin out. Read more...

| Serene magic.Sarah McLachlan's voice just carries you right along. Listening to this helps me put aside the chaos of the holiday. I would have given this five stars, but there's just one thing missing. Her rendition of "I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day" is amazing; I ended up purchasing it separately. As my kids would put it - she 'owns' that song. Read more...

| Refreshing new musicAs a guitar player and long time blues/rock enthusiast I am quite impressed with this album. The songs are soulful and the lyrics meaningful. Susan's guitar playing has grown nicely and her tone on that semi-hollow electric is beautiful. It is refreshing to see/hear a woman who isn't afraid to be feminine in a male dominated industry. Her voice ranges from beautifully soulful to raspy. Although she is a pleasure to behold, she does not rely on sex appeal (or at least does not need to or appear to) to sell her music. Seeing her singing on the old Derek & the Dominos song, Anyday, at the Clapton Crossroad 2007 festival with husband Derek Trucks' band was one of the highlights of that show. Having him guest on a couple of tracks adds a measure of dynamics that can't be quantified solely in musical terms.
