| great album, periodThis isn't a great nu metal, or whatever else you want to call it, album. It's just a great album. The most common complaints are that it's commercial (true), popular (true), and tired (I'll say debatable). There's nothing wrong with an album doing well; that is, just because the cheerleaders started listening to KoRn doesn't mean the album sucks. In fact, the theme of this album touches on how KoRn paved the way, which is also somewhat debatable. However, they did break ground in making people sit up and notice the genre.
What about the music? Well, every song on this album has great beats, innovative sound, and well-delivered lyrics. It's true that the lyrics don't seem quite as profound to me now as they did when I was 14, but not everything has to be poetry. Sometimes you want to listen to well-produced music with relatable - although dark - lyrics that you can dance, scream, and/or party to. Read more...

| SOAD's Best and THE Best of 2001I'm not much into speed metal, nu-metal or death metal. I like music that plays great and lyrics that make sense. After hearing Chop Suey and Toxicity, I knew I had to have this CD. Upon listening to the entire CD and comparing the lyrics and sheet music, I rated this as one of the best CD's to come along since Rush's Moving Pictures. As for it being catagorized as nu-metal, Amazon should replace who ever does that job. This is far from being nu-metal. It's more of a fusion of modern metal and progressive rock, leaning more toward the later. My suggestion is to add this to your collection. You won't be sorry. Read more...

| "Killing in the name of..."Probably the only rap-metal album that honestly qualifies as any good, and definitely the most violently liberal album I've ever heard in my life. Not like I mind, of course. But if you don't agree with the politics, it'll probably hurt your enjoyment of the album. Enough of that, though. The point is that this band is awesome. Especially guitarist Tom Mollero, who comes up with brilliant riffs throughout and throws in all kinds of innovative, crazy solos that don't sound like they're coming from a guitar. The solo on "Killing in the Name" sounds like it could've came from a synthesizer, for instance. The stuff he pulls on "Take the Power Back" sounds like turntable work or something, his solo on "Bullet in the Head" seems a lot like a clavinet, and the squeals on "Fistful of Steel" could be a siren going off. But it's all guitar! I don't even know what to call the stuff in "Township Rebellion," but since no keyboards, synthesizers, or sampling was used in the making of this record, that's guitar too, I guess. He even manages to somewhat save the turgid "Settle for Nothing" with a quiet, jazzy solo. And then there's Zack de la Rocha, easily the angriest of all the angry young men of the '90s. His rants are awesome, whether they're the "You're gonna burn!" chorus in "Bombtrack" (which owns, by the way), the infamous "f*** you, I won't do what you tell me" bits from the absolutely fantastic "Killing in the Name," or the "ALL OF WHICH ARE AMERICAN DREAMS!" segment of "Know Your Enemy." I'm also a fan of bassist Tim Commerfield, who manages to play both melodically and funkily throughout ("Take the Power Back," "Bullet in the Head"), and him and drummer Brad Wilk know how to keep a solid, very funky groove, which gives them cool points ("Bombtrack," "Bullet in the Head"). On top of that, most of their songs have multiple parts! I like multipart songs. "Killing in the Name" has something like three - a weird, effects-laden guitar intro that for some reason always makes me think I'm listening to some one besides Rage, this really cool part where it sounds like Tom is dueling with himself, and the main part of the song. "Know Your Enemy" has a slow, funky intro with another clavinet-guitar part, a fast, hard, punk-funk part, and a slow metal section that features Tool's Manyard James Keenan on vocals, "Wake Up" (featured in The Matrix, which means it would be good even if it was bad, which it isn't) speeds up and slows down and has a brief but fascinating build-up section. "Freedom" speeds up and changes its guitar tone so much, you'd think it wasn't one song, but several different ones mashed together. I'm not a huge fan of the song itself (de la Rocha's screams sound constipated, which isn't a good thing), but it's not bad, and the complete changes it makes are unpredictable, which is a good thing. Really, the only problem with the album is that it's really limited. It must be said that, once you've heard one Rage song, you've kind of heard them all. But you should hear... fifteen, twenty, I'm guessing? And yes, ten of them should be from this album. Read more...

| The Album That Started It AllJust one year before this came out the Beatles were really a rock band that wrote just bubblegum pop love songs but this album would change all that. By 1965 The Beatles had already made six albums and the movie A Hard Day's Night with one of the reasons why the band in that movie acted so weird was because they got introduced to marijuana by Bob Dylan that same time. Anyways back too the point. Rubber Soul was a very important album for three reasons:
1. One of the first rock albums of all time too include sitar and was when the Beatles became a more album based band and its very creative with songs like, Norwegian Wood(sitar), Nowhere Man, Think For Yourself, Drive My Car, and really every other track on Rubber Soul.
2. Rubber Soul is defenently by far one of the first rock records that was considered art and the first one that was actullay creative, and more great albums would come after Rubber Soul, Revolver, Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band, and The White Albu, and Abbey Road. An essential rock album
3. Last but not least Rubber Soul also influenced one of the greatest rock albums of all time, Pet Sounds, when Pet Sounds in turn would influence Sgt. Peppers.
Rubber Soul even ranked number five on rolling stones list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.
An essential rock album one of the best of all time every thing about this album is perfect.

| Moved Beyond WordsI am a TSO fan. I've seen them live a couple of times and thoroughly enjoyed myself. I've listened to their Christmas albums and found them filled with gems. But I was not ready for Beethoven's Last Night.
While based on a ficitional account of the night that Beethoven died, this album is much more. I found myself truly stunned by the cleverness of the lyrics, the power of the vocals performances, the message that the album delivers, and I was, quite frankly, shocked at the album's ability to grab onto my soul and make me listen to it over and over and over again.
Wonderful musical peformances, stirring vocals, an imaginative and clever story line... what else could one wish for?

| Wide Awake to listen to the gorgeous sounds of Josh Groban...The first time I heard Josh Groban's voice was on the radio with his most famous song, "You Raise Me Up." While the song is not one of my favorites, his voice was unforgettable. How many ways can I describe his voice? Deeply moving. Colorful. Emotive. Purely masculine. And also very versatile, as proven with the brilliant TV theme song medley he sang at the Emmys earlier this year.
But let's talk about AWAKE. The song that drew me to this album was "You Are Loved," one of the most divinely inspirational songs I've ever heard. At first, I thought that it was a friend or lover speaking, telling their beloved to push on and persevere. Now, after listening to it many countless times, I interpret it as God singing to His children, reminding them of the love and comfort that they have to rely upon.
The whole album is a soaring experience from the Italian language opener "Mai," meaning "Never" to the closing collaboration with Herbie Hancock, "Machine." Some of the stand-outs for me are the mystery-laden, haunting "Lullaby" and the tragic story told in "Weeping." There's also plenty of shimmering romance in songs such as "Now or Never" and most notably in "Un giorno per noi," translated as "A Day for us." Yes, AWAKE has a different sound than Josh's previous albums, but it is representative of his artistic versatility.
If you love Josh Groban's masterful voice as I do, then you should enjoy any of his albums. But the one I recommend the most other than AWAKE is his debut album with a profound song telling of loss and envisioning Heaven: "To Where You Are." Words cannot express how that song has worked in my life after losing my dad.
(Sidenote: Like many other listeners, I'm also interested in a Christmas release with "Oh Holy Night" and "Believe." Maybe eventually...) Read more...
