| Staind is BACK - almost!I agree with other reviewers that Aaron Lewis is one of the best songwriters alive today. I loved the early Staind albums and thought they went too soft and too shallow with 15 Shadews of Gray. The singles on this album (eg; All I Want) are not my favorite and seems a bit of a sellout, but there are otherwise some amazing tracks on here (Tangled Up In you, Raining Again). There may never be another song like "It's Been Awhile" (Break the Cycle), but I am enjoying this album thoroughly. Read more...

| The Only Jimi You'll Need There are older Jimi Hendrix collections out there, like Smash Hits - but don't bother with them. This is the one to get. Like most say, this one really packages the essential hits.
My only quibble about Hendrix's catalogue is that he came in an era where the audio recording technology available to him wasn't as sonically superb (only the Beatles would exceed all peers)...so it's a little rough here and there but the man's brilliance shines through. Remastering has no doubt improved what was there, but it hasn't done wonders to enhance the mixes. Regardless, there was really only one Hendrix and his influence on those around him and those who came after was indelible. Experience Hendrix! Read more...

| circuitous journeyi've had this music for a while - recently picked it up again to give to a friend. his excitement with "the crane wife" reflected my own: that the total piece is a journey of moods and situations, exclamations and saturnine musings. it works on you. when i think about the music i've really liked over the last 10 years, it's been those recordings that worked on me over time, cropping up and getting tied to certain events, certain feelings. "the crane wife" has become one of those recordings for me. it's well worth the listen, and i think it's a great intro to the rest of the decembertists catalog of work. Read more...

| Bravo Mr Green, excellent albumI can almost hear the discussions that went on between James Poyser, ?uestlove and Al Green before the first song was recorded. The debates about whether they should attempt to update Al's sound or go really retro. I'm sure we've all debated what Marvin Gaye would sound like if he was still alive? I think Al Green gives an interesting perspective on that question. If his latest CD is anything to go by, then I think the answer would be `exactly the way he did when he was alive and thank God for that'
That is what Al Green does on his latest album, he does the music he's most famous for, no reinventions, evolutions or experimentations. This is Al Green as my folks would remember. I'm not a scholar of his music but I've felt the impact of his music through hip-hop. I found this to be a brilliant introduction to the good reverend.
Words cannot describe how great this album is, I'm scratching my head wondering whether he was always this good or if this is special even by his own standards. This is by some distance my favourite album of the year (in any genre)
He is no magician with the pen and a close inspection of some of the lyrics reveals many shortcomings. `Lay It Down' is a prime example of what I'm referring to. Al Green's trump card is his butter smooth delivery (to borrow from my genre of choice, hip-hop) and his voice which is reminiscent of Mr. Biggs from the Isley brothers. He's a child of soul and every track on the album is drenched in it.
Credit also has to go to his production team whose interpretation of Al Green sound is no interpretation at all but the real thing. I'll be honest when ?uestlove started talking about making an album with Al Green 2 years ago I was skeptical. I thought the album would never see the light of day or would end up like his interpretation of Pharrell's "In My Mind".
Enlisting the assistance of Anthony Hamilton (who is probably the only artist who can even come close to Al), Corrine Bailey Rae and John Legend was also a master stroke.

| A Love SupremeJohn Coltrane-A Love Supreme *****
Being a massive Miles Davis fan but not owning much jazz other than Davis, Coltrane came highly recommended, especially A Love Supreme. So I finally broke down and bought it, and my only gripe is with myself, that I didn't buy this masterpiece sooner! Upon hearing the title I assumed it was a spiritual album of sorts, and I was correct. The album symbolizes Coltrane's search for music, spiritual, and cultural freedom. Though I'm not sure he live long enough to see all those things go into effect, I am pretty sure he did gain his musical freedom.
A Love Supreme plays out like a suite of hope, redemption, and remorse. The power of McCoy Tyners piano through out adds elements of life to a bleak bass line like that of Jimmy Garrison (and by bleak I mean melancholy). Coltrane's tenor saxophone is chilling at times, especially during the droning 'Psalm' which closes the album. But what makes this album especially memorable for me is Elvin Jones. His playing through out the album is phenomenal. Some of the all time best drumming I have ever heard. 'Pursuance' has easily the best drum solo of all time! Eat your heart out John Bonham! 'Acknowledgement' opens the album with a bold statement wrapped in polyrythyms, While 'Resolution' like the title may suggest seems to be the answer or counter part to 'Acknowledgement.'
As you all know A Love Supreme is a classic jazz album, but more than that it is a classic album of all time branching more that just jazz. So do yourself a favor and don't put it off any longer as I did. Because this must be heard to appreciate because my review chances are did not do it justice. Read more...
