| Feh...I really admire Tony Bennett, and I love Count Basie; their albums together, though not the equal of Basie's work with Sinatra, are outstanding...but the engineering/production on this disc is very flat. It reduces the sound of the Basie band to a quasi-karaoke background (it sounds more like a trio than a band); there's no 'richness' in the playing. Since Bennett's voice is understandably thin at this point in his career, the result is a washed-out sound that sounds more like a demo than a finished product. The swinging work sounds better than the ballads, but there needed to be sweetening of both the bass and perhaps the judicious introduction of strings to give this some depth. I don't think this will get a lot of playtime at our house. Read more...

| David Byrne is on a roll (along with Brian Eno)After the satisfying "Growing Backwards" album in 2004, which was David Byrne's most exciting album in a long time (for me anyway), Byrne now returns with yet another fine album, only that this time it is a collaboration with Brian Eno. I don't dare say that this is the long-awaited follow-up to the Byrne/Eno 1981 classic "My Life in the Bush of Ghosts" album, but timing-wise this would be a correct statement.
On "Everything That Happens Will Happen Today", Eno and Byrne bring a lush landscape, quite different form the "Ghosts" album. The opener "Home" is a slow, almost majestic, song, as is the title track. The 'classic' Eno/Byrne sound (recalling the Eno-produced Talking Heads albums and the "Ghosts" album) comes through in tracks like "I Feel My Stuff", "Strange Overtones" (which is the best song on the album for me), "Wanted For Life" and "Poor Boy". The closer "The Lighthouse" is a beautiful pensive tune that is the perfect way to round out the album. In all, this album is a delight to listen to pretty much from start to finish.
I had the opportunity to see David Byrne in concert a couple of months ago at the beautiful Warner Theatre in Washington, DC in support of this album, and what a magical evening that was (being in the second row, in spitting distance of Byrne, certainly didn't hurt). He brought a bunch of songs from this album (including Strange Overtones, My Big Nurse, Life Is Long, and others), and truth be told, I thought that a number of the songs sounded better live than on the album. Of course there were a bunch of songs as well from the Eno-produced "Fear of Music" and "Remain in Light" Talking Head albums. If you have a chance to see him on this tour, do not miss out on it! | LOVEI heard Bon Iver playing Skinny Love live on David Letterman before falling asleep and made a mental note to myself to find out more.
I loved this song so much that January 3rd I could remember the date that Bon Iver played (December 11th).
I bought the album without previewing the other songs.
This is one of those albums that can be played on repeat.
The lyrics and music are beautiful.
Bon Iver is a genesis.
This is the best work I have discovered in awhile! :) Read more...

| Favourite of '08.Once again Fall Out Boy has managed to produce my favourite album of the year. I bought Folie a Deux the day it was released and haven't stopped listening to it yet. There's not a song on this album that I don't like and I have yet to find only one absolute favourite.
Fall Out Boy have done some truly interesting things with their sound this go around. They've really come together as a band on Folie a Deux and instead of just one truly great part there are four. Of the 14 songs on this album (13 songs and a hidden track) there's a few songs that I'm drawn to, that I listen to over and over again.
It's so hard to narrow down though there's so many awesome things about all of the songs. I can't help listening to 'She's My Winona' and 'West Coast Smoker' (oh hell yes!) but '(Coffee's for Closers)' and '20 Dollar Nose Bleed' make me happy in my soul. and and and... I could go on. In my mind there is nothing on Folie a Deux that is not to love. Read more...
